In 2009, IES made a $500 donation to the ISU student group, Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). ESW is a national organization that mobilizes engineering students and professionals through global service projects that improve the quality of life in developing countries. Biogas and water harvesting projects in Uganda are improving the livelihoods of Ugandan farmers by implementing appropriate technologies for household energy and drinking water. ESW student teams work with local organizations and farmers, transferring technical knowledge as well as learning from them. Each summer since 2006, ISU students have traveled to Uganda for eight to ten weeks, to implement these projects along with ESW’s Ugandan partners.
Over spring break in 2009, one of IES’s 2008 scholarship winners, Pavel Beresnev, had the opportunity to travel to India on an assessment trip to evaluate the potential of transfer of rainwater harvesting technology to a new site. Pavel and some of his team members delivered a presentation to IES during the May 20th, 2009 meeting about his experience during his trip abroad.
